Speaker
The speaker for this month’s Friends Member’s Meeting is Jeanne Howerton, a local author and photographer. Jeanne is going to be discussing her new book, “Skidoo”. Jeanne is a fourth generation Nevadan, who grew up on the Blue Eagle Ranch, 250 miles north of Las Vegas. An educator by profession, Jeanne is an accomplished photographer and local historian who has published 6 books on the history of Central Nye County. As a 9-year old child, she started keeping diaries and her first diary is published as: “1957: The Diary of Nevada Ranch Girl”. Jeanne has lived in Las Vegas for 50 years and continues researching and writing down the history of Central Nevada.
Jeanne’s topic will be “Finding Love before the age of online Dating”. In the mining camp of Reveille, Nevada, 41-year old Herman Reischke sold a silver mine for $50,000,but he could not find a wife. In Crestline, Ohio, Alvena Kroegel, age 32, could not find a husband. In 1906, Herman took an ad in the newspaper looking for a wife. Alvena answered, beginning a 2-year courtship. Told through the letters, diaries, memoranda, documents, and photographs saved by the family for over 100 years, this story is a unique look at the daily struggles of making a living and raising a family in the remote communities of Nevada.
