Description
Today we are making cootie catchers, which in other cultures and countries are also known as fortune tellers, chatterboxes, salt cellars, whirlybirds, or paku-paku. These are all a form of origami that dates back centuries from the Japanese words “oru” (to fold) and “kami” (paper).
The salt cellar name is likely derived from a 1928 book titled ‘Fun with Paper Folding’ which showed the paper device inverted from how we’re used to seeing it today. It was similar to a container that could hold and pour salt, with the points of the cootie catcher becoming legs and the spaces for fingers opening up to hold the salt.
Often there are rhymes associated with the games, such as, “Circle, circle, dot, dot, now I’ve got my cootie shot.” In this instance the ‘cootie catcher’ was doing exactly that – being used to eradicate lice from a friend’s hair!
Come and join us, relive your childhood memories and share with your children or grandchildren as you make your own cootie catcher at our hands-on Discovery Saturday programs designed for everyone of all ages.
10 am to 2 pm in our Special Events Room.
Free with regular admission.
